Question:
Pioneer receiver VSX-1016V and Pioneer Plasma TV PDP-607XD hdmi problem?
2013-11-21 06:03:25 UTC
I am trying to connect my HD device to TV and receiver but cant get the audio to work

I plug in the HDMI cable from HD device in receiver input 1 and then another HDMI cable in receivers HDMI out witch is connected to TV and the problem is that receiver forwards the audio.
If i try and plug in optical cable TV and plug in receiver it still doesn't work but it works with analog cables or if i plug headphones in the TV.

The HD device has only HDMI out and RCA audio out but i am trying to avoid those and configure the HD sound

i tried connecting HD device straight to TV and then optical to receiver still doesn't work.
when i plug just optical cable from another device then the audio works

Can the receiver split HDMI audio and video?
If no should i buy a splitter of some sort?

Why isn't the TVoptical cable work ?

Should i just stick to low quality RCA audio ?

Or should i just Jump out of a window ?

You need to see page 44 of the owners manual here:

http://docs.pioneer.eu/Manuals/VSX_1016V_S_ARB7359_manual/

I have to admit, it's not the clearest of instructions but my interpretation is as follows:

The VSX1016AV only has audio pass through on HDMI, this means it will pass audio from the HDMI cable through to the TV but will not actually decode it in the amplifier. Things have moved on since then & modern amplifier do decode audio from the HDMI but many earlier models did not have this feature. This means you need to connect a secondary audio cable from the source & associate it with the same input. Follow the instructions on Page 44 (with a detour to Page 50 to choose what input to associate it with) then plug the audio feed into this input.

A secondary problem you may be having is that many modern HD sources don't output audio via the digital audio outputs unless you go into the setup menu & switch this on. They pretty much assume you are doing everything with HDMI. You don't specify what our HD source is so you'll need to dig out the manual if you get stuck. The next problem you'll encounter is that most HD sources will not output multi-channel audio (ie DTS/Dolby Digital) on both the HDMI & Optical simultaneously (some not at all on optical) You will need to downgrade the audio setting on the HDMI ouput to stereo to allow the optical output to handle multi-channel. If this is a BluRay or DVD player this is definitely possible. If it is an HDTV receiver you may find the settings a whole lot more restrictive.

Well first of all HDMI processes digital audio and video. Are you sure you have the TV on the right input setting? It could simply be that you do not have the tv tuned to the right video input try switching between the AV selections until you see picture on the tv if you have separate video cable connected to TV for the same device disconnect this it is interfering with the signal HDMI does it all one for unit, one for TV. Also make sure that you have the HDMI going to the TV in the right port on the receiver.

You can test you optical cable by hooking it to the TV then looking at the end of it to see if the light "is on".

Sometimes those opitical cable get dirty on the ends with dust or something and that can interfere with light transmission.
