Question:
Can I hook up bookshelf speakers to an old Sony MHC-GX470 receiver?

So I have this component system, actually just one speaker, the sub, and the receiver. You can see it here:

http://store.sony.com/p/MHC-GX470/en/p/MHCGX470#specifications

The sony website above ^ says that the receiver has an output 125 watts/channel with a minimum of 6 ohm. So I was planning on upgrading this system by buying two new bookshelf speakers such as these:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-4-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350545147&sr=8-1&keywords=bookshelf+speakers

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS21-LR-Watt-2-Way-Speakers/dp/B004MEWZE4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1350545147&sr=8-7&keywords=bookshelf+speakers

Will the receiver be able to maximize the potential of these speakers and which one of these would you recommend? (Or any other speakers perhaps?)

Thanks

I'll try to be a bit more polite than the other answerers. However, AV Daddy has a point. The Sony is not a receiver. It is a cheap, all in one system with low quality parts and design. The power ratings are exaggerated. It is far from "high fidelity." You'd be wasting your time hooking up decent speakers to it. However, you could do so as a temporary measure until you get a real, high quality receiver made by a firm that specializes in such things - Ontko, Marantz, Yamaha, etc.

The comment about blowing the speakers is nonsense. If anything speakers are safer by being overpowered. This lessens the possibility of damage from the amplifier being overdriven - into "clipping" - which causes far more damage (on average) than using a strong amplifier which can damage speakers with undistorted output. If someone is going to be irresponsible and crank up the system too loud, damage will result no matter what whether it be damage to the amplifier or the speakers (or both). BTW, I'd go with the Dayton speakers. Better design and components.

Are you trying to play the audio from the PS2 to the Sony System. There should be an audio in or aux jack on the sony system, You would need an audio cable to run between the two of them. The play station 2 probably has a phono type jack ( I don't know, as I don't have one) If it does not, than it can not be done unless you take the patch cord that has the a/v connectors and connect the video to the monitor and then buy a Y adaptor that accepts the two RCA audio cables on one end and a phono cable on the other end to place in the Sony system. Wish I could help more but I would need to know what both systems have.

If the amp specs are correct then you will fry the speakers when you crank it or if a friend turns it up.

Because of how they rate to power I would start with something around this price range or even higher.
