Best speakers for house parties?

I currently have Klipsch HD Theater 300 speakers which sound good but unfortunately don't play loud enough. I have them powered by a Yamaha RX-V465 Receiver. I need some speakers that go pretty loud and can sustain the volume so they don't damage themselves or any part of the system. I was wondering if I'd need an amp or if my receiver would be powerful enough? I would love to use my subwoofer if at all possible.

Thank you

I use a combination of Infinty, Sony and Bose speakers. Infinty makes great speakers and so does Sony. I use a Harmon Kardon receiver that is 7.1. Sonys pack a punch. I actually am using two I took from my home theater in a box set that were quite small but are really loud.

What's your budget?? I'd say Carlton is right... Hiring a dj is easiest. Or You can go out and spend about a grand or so on some powered -Active monitor speakers like the KRK Rokit 8 speakers. They are sold in singles- so I'd recommend a pair for 150 ppl. These are professional monitors and will go very loud: loud enough especially for indoor parties... Ok for outdoor too. They have dual 8" glass aramid (carbon derivative) woofers and dedicated tweeters+ 1 amp per driver= total 4 amps. They'll do the trick: high quality, loud music. They'll take an iPod/iPhone source no problem... The music selection up to you! Good luck!

always amp your speakers!!! in my experience more power equates to better sound, even if you dont use it. the amp isn't struggling to send power to your speakers so it will sound better at lower volume. when you turn it up, it isn't as labored as the stock sony amp inside the receiver and it will sound better. also, the sony amp will clip the signal when you try to get more voltage from the amp than it can produce but that is the same for any amp, some amps just put out more voltage than others.

if you want to go the easiest and cheapest route i'd recommend a five channel amp for those speakers and call it a day.

if you want to get (a little) more technical get a new sub as stock is only a 6.5 inch powered by 80 wrms. check parts-express.com for raw drivers (subs and speakers) and look for high efficiency speakers. the ratings are usually like 87db at one meter with one watt of power applied. high efficiency speakers will have ratings of 92 db+ and because how we perceive sound, a gain of 6 to 10 db is effectively twice as loud. another interesting acoustic fact is that a doubling of power yields a 3 db gain so you would have to triple or quadruple the power to a speaker in order for it to sound twice as loud

. you could use the stock enclosure, swap the driver and plate amp and have like 300 watts rms going to a 10" sub or go crazy and do a dual 15 dipole design. i guess it really comes down to how loud you want it, how much money you have and how much work you want to do. check diyaudio.com if you want to get into this stuff. the forums have a crazy amount of info on them if you sit, read and study for a few hours.

if it were my party rig and money weren't a factor, id scrap the receiver and play my music of a pc running j play, and a high quality dac then maybe some mini dsps to set my xovers then my own amps running at least 10kwrms. get 4 18s for sub duty, then 4 12s for 120hz to say... 3000 hz then a few horns for 3000 to 20khz. it would only be two channel plus sub and i'd probably do an ib (infinite baffle) sub install. all in all, educate yourself and you can decide what is best for your budget and tastes. no one knows you better than you and everyone has a different "best"

sorry for rambling, if you can understand this it should probably help haha good luck!! it looks like you'll need it.

Actually larger Klipsch speakers would do the trick something like the RF-82 but if you need something less expensive take a look at DJ speakers for that receiver you want a speaker that has high sensitivity and is 8 ohm something like the Technical Pro Max 1501.....or Behringers

My first choice for loud party speakers would be vintage Altec Model 19 Studio Monitors. These were big in the 1970's. Here is a set on e-bay for $1800 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170953389081 If I had a place for them I would nab them... actually I wouldn't I would just build my own replicas but if you want to avoid the work this is one opportunity. I've also seen replica cabinets on e-bay so another option would be to find those and buy all the hardware separately. For a 40 year old design, these are hard to beat in this type of speaker.

For a more modern much cheaper option you should consider Behringer. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=248-6478 These won't sound a fraction as good as the Model 19's but they will play loud and be ok for parties as long as it's not a party for audiophiles.

I say you go for orbits all of their models are great but the best is the m10lx and the m12 very powerful speaker and incredibly powerful base plus these speakers arent huge the price is around $650 or £470 in my opinion i think orbitsound beats bose, sony and infinity
