It's hard to say. It depends on what technology you want to use. DLP, LCD, LCD Rear Projection, Plasma. Projections now use DLP technology. The cheapest projector you might find will around a grand!($1,000). The prices will differ between resolution 720i & 1080i, or 720p & 1080p. The (i) stands for interlace and (p) stands for progressive. Progressive will show a better picture and will cost slightly more.

Projectors only work if your room is completely dark or can be made dark fairly easily.
I have seen setups with both a plasma tv on the wall, and an automatic screen to roll down. This way the owner could watch TV during the day (allbeit on a smaller TV) and then at night roll down his projector screen and turn his room into a movie theater. Nice, but not cheap.
As far as comparing projectors, they are very pricey for even mid-level units. ($15K easily.) LDC and Plasma TVs are lot more readily available and picture quality can't be beaten.
I'd start with an online shopping site like Shopzilla. (www.shopzilla.com) I've found they have an extensive product base that will point you in the right direction.

I spent alot of time at CEDIA last fall looking at lots of projectors, screens, plasmas, LCD's , etc, etc. Two things surprised me:
1. ALL of the projectors I saw sucked, compared to the plasmas & LCD TV's. The Pioneers and Panasonics (plasma) were exceptional -- the best.
2. Unless you have a TOTALLY dark room, the color from a projector looks very washed out -- worse than a cheap TV from WalMart. Check out best prices at Froogle, but if I were you I'd also check out your options in person -- the difference is amazing. Also, if you shop online, www.crutchfield.com has th ebest selection & service.

Amazon/Target currently has a 32" Olevia Syntax LCD on sale for 899. I have the 37" and am happy with the quality and price.
