Hi! I was looking into buying a Sony home theater system and I was wanting a Blu-Ray player to use with my HDTV. Well, as I got to looking, the Blu Ray home theater systems are REALLY expensive so I was thinking about going with a DVD home theater system and getting a Blu Ray player when the time comes. I'm interested in the Sony DAV-HDX589W Home Theater System. The problem is, it doesn't have any video inputs if I ever decide to get a Blu Ray player. So, my question is if I hook the Blu Ray player up to the TV and use a digital audio cable to connect the TV to the home theater system, will I get the same audio quality as if the Blu Ray player was directly connected to the home theater system?? Thanks in advance for your answers!!

Here's a link to the home theater system I'm interested in: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665793556

Depending on the TV you have, you would have to do this.....Connect the Blu Ray player using an HDMI cable to the TV. On the back of the newer Sony players is an Optical Out. If the HT system has an Optical input than you are in business. As the other person said, you wont get the True HD or DTS Master audio, but it will sound good. I would not run the audio to the TV and then back to the HT receiver as it will not sound as clean.

OR...if you want to reconsider your stance on the BLU RAY HT....

Try Frye's. They usually have the Blu Ray HTsystems from Sony and Panasonic as cheap as $599. You'll almost spend that much if you buy them separately, and you wont have to struggle with finding the right cord as you will only need the HDMI to your TV. Panasonic is actually higher rated than Sony and they.

Yes, optical to the Sony unit will work, but the caveat is that optical cannot handle the lossless audio (Dolby TrueHD, and Dts HD Master audio) on bluray discs, so you'd only be able to hear the Dolby Digital or standard Dts soundtracks. It's not a huge deal, because those soundtracks sound really good, but if you're really into audio and having the slightly higher quality lossless formats available is important to you, it could be a dealbreaker. To get those lossless formats, you'd need a system with an HDMI input, which this Sony doesn't have.

If that is a dealbreaker, look at some of the Onkyo home theater systems (Home theater in a box like the Sony). They come with full receivers with multiple HDMI inputs that will allow plenty of room for expansion in the future. You'd have to buy a separate DVD player, but a good DVD player can easily be found for $60.

Oh, and yes the setup you described - optical from the TV to the Sony will give you the same audio quality.

A HTIB won't do what you like, they'll basically play encompass sound from the blu ray participant featuring the device. they don't look to be flexable. Your perfect wager would to save sufficient money so as so which you are able to purchase a good receiver and a few good audio device. stay faraway from a HT IB.

Yes, it will except for HD sound. You connect HDMI from Blu-ray player to TV for video and optical or coaxial digital cable from Blu-ray player to this system for surround sound, not from TV to system.
