The DVD player in my home theater system just broke down but the speakers are still working. So i was wondering if there is any way i can connect the speakers directly to my PC. That is, connecting the home theater speakers(5.1) directly to the PC without connecting them to the DVD player first.

No.

That DVD player contains a cheap amplifier to power the speakers. And the speakers from a box system can be designed to only work with the electronics sold as a set. They typically are NOT transferable. People who try - often damage more expensive gear by trying.

You'll have to use the sound output to go to your Tuner or Aplmifier with a view to vigour the audio system. It could be excellent for those who had a sound card that has RCA output. Or else you will ought to use the little jack plug in with a connecter to change it to RCA jack. The pc can't push ample vigour to these speakers. Appear at your computer speakers, even they've inner amplifier (the laptop isn't powering them) they need to plug into the wall or a USB port to get vigour to the internal amplifier.

You need a 6 channel amplifier. Or three of those Lepai T-amps or similar stereo amp. Or see if you can use the amp system from the DVD player. Connect all that to the surround out on your computer.

1)3.5MM To Stereo Rca Cables. you will need to buy these cables.

2)If your amplifier and pc has hdmi port , then you just need to buy hdmi cables.

3)if you want better surround sound quality , then you can buy a usb 5.1 sound card external( Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1) or sound card that you have to install inside your desktop like Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D PCIe Sound Card. It comes with digital optical out. In that case you will need to buy the sound card + digital optic cable.
