I know people who have a Bose system, its excellent but too pricey. Any alternatives? What do I need to look for in a system (how many watts, etc.)

Well, it really depends on your budget, if you can afford to spend around $500 then check out the JVC TH-C6 which is a 5.1 surround sound system with a DVD player, otherwise known as a Home Theater in a Box. It has about a 1000 watts of total power and includes a 6" subwoofer, I own this system and I think it sounds just as good as Bose systems, if not better.
See the specs here, http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_TH_C6/4507-6740_7-31392577.html?tag=sub
and read Cnets review here, http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_TH_C6/4505-6740_7-31392577.html
You can get it for about $460 from B&H Photo, http://www.bizrate.com/marketplace/search/search__cat_id--11120000,nwylf--,prod_id--330261421,sort--7.html
