First there really is not one brand that is best. The best home theater or surround system would be custom designed using speakers and equipment that each manufacturer specializes in making. Most of the best speakers are designed by manufactures that only make speakers, and equipment manufactures that only make equipment.

When your talking the best, most people are not familiar with the best brands being made. They are only sold in high end audio video stores. The chain stores only carry mid fi equipment at best (98% of it is low end), and many of these stores have no clue how to properly design and install a home theater system.

There is allot to know when designing and installing a higher quality system. The best place to go is your local independent high end audio video store. They not only carry the better brands of speakers and equipment, they generally have many years experience designing higher quality systems. Designing a system that is right for your needs takes someone with the knowledge and expertise to take the time and help you.

Unfortunately there is a tremendous amount of poor and even bad information on this subject and everyone seems to be an expert. Even some of the bigger trade magazines and online forums really don't know what they are doing. Absolute Sound and Stereophile are the two best trade magazines on the market, the reviewers are very knowledgeable, they do a good job of reviewing some of the very best in all budget ranges.

So when you say the best, it can get very expensive, the key is finding the best at your budget and if your able to invest a decent amount of money, leave it to a professional that knows what he is doing.

I think the link below will provide you with a variety of brands that are critically the best bang for the buck. As well as the best value bar none.

Personally, I like a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I like what I read about Definitive Speakers, Axiom is a really sweet speaker company, worth a look. I prefer NAD amps and receivers, but I have a soft spot for Onkyo. I have always loved the brand since I was a teenager. Increasingly either Digital Audio's D1 or Peachtree's digital audio converter are outstanding options to bring recordings to their peak right in your home no fuss, no figuring it out. http://www.ehow.com/list

Best.

P.S. No dis-respect to the sales profession but Kevin, Lance and Maniac are among the handful that you can trust to give you advice. For they are true in so many ways. My angst is often I am respected entering the door, but under-estimated when I walk through the store or shop asking pin point questions. The response is like catching them off guard. No rationale accompanies their answers, then I pursue the question and many have no depth, none. It is for this reason, I always encourage people to read, know something then believe in something then ask someone and weigh the advice. The advice shouldn't be lopsided because they dislike or like the brand, this shows bias and a lack of understanding from my standpoint. The value of my standpoint is that I am looking to buy. Speaking from the point of view of an enthusiast only, the beauty of audio is what you can do with pieces and parts. How you can complement and accentuate strengths and weakness of what you buy into. It is ultimately a balanced approach that leads to sonic balance and clarity.

This will depend on your personal budget. One thing that I would not recommend is one of those home theater in a box. They are not flexible for adding anything to them or for upgrading. When one item fails, you have to replace the whole system. This will also depend on the size of the room you are going to have the system in. A separate receiver and a set of speakers would be a much better choice. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same expectation on what it should sound like. I would recommend you go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on products you are interested in. Hope this will help you out.

In short, there isn't one.

There are many good brands, and some either mediocre or bad brands, and there are brands here they are good at one area, but not good at another.

I'll give some examples: Bose is just Bad. (Google 'Bose sucks'). Grossly overpriced, and just Not Good at all. Sony makes good DVD players, but I would not buy a Sony receiver, and never consider Sony speakers.

Pioneer makes good electronics, but as with Sony, skip their speakers. Same comment about Panasonic.

Good speaker makers include Polk, Infinity, and JBL. They don't make receivers or disc players.

And, NEVER buy an all in one HT system. Pure garbage all the way.
