Question:
Inexpensive way to switch multiple DVI/HDMI sources?
2006-02-22 10:29:09 UTC
I have the following home theater system of outputs and inputs.

DVD Player - DVI Output
HD Tuner - HDMI Output
Intel iMac - DVI Output

LCD Projector - HDMI Input

Taking into account that I can use cords to convert HDMI to DVI or visa-verse. And sound is handled via TOS link. Is there a sub-$200 way of switching between the sources to the projector? Will a 4 port KVM switch work? Has anyone successfully solved this problem for a reasonable price?

You can convert the DVI signals into Component(3 seperate RCA cables). You can purchase the adapters at SEWELLDIRECT.COM for about $20.00 each. RCA type Switches are inexpensive Svideo.com has a high quality one for less than $90.00. Of course you could go to Wal-Mart and buy a $15.00 4 way rca cable switch but it may degrade the picture.

I am guessing you wish to connect all of these to the projector? Your DVD can go into your HDTuner via DVI just fine. Your Tuner can go into your projector just fine. Purely digital. The main difference between HDMI and DVI is sound. Although if you upconvert, you would be best off using HDMI.

As for the iMac. it will connect to the HDMI input with a $20.00 adaptor at any local electronics retailer. DVI to HDMI plug. However, the sound will obvisouly have to be carried separately. But I am guessing you want a switch or an autosensing switch to allow all appliances to connect to the projector. Again, for about $125.00 you can get an auto source HDMI duplex switch. It will sense the input from the tuner (where the DVD passes through) or the iMac and allow the projector to run. However, if both are playing, I am not sure how the signalis processed. Probably it just shuts down.

Post additional details on what your goal is and I will be more specific with products that will work.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Work has to come first.

I have the gefen 3x1 HDMi switch and use it with an inFocus projector and my powerbook and Sony DVD just fine. It is part # EXT-HDMI-341-BLK. I paid about $200 for it, and it has a remote I wish I got the auto sensing 3 way as it will automatically sense what source you are using. That is like 299.00.

best of luck. I love using my iMac and Frontrow for my home theater.

I'll be in a market for such a beast once Blu-ray HD disc players (or HD-DVD players) are released later this year and when HD Tivo Series 3 comes out.

So, I can't recommend a particular brand.

I can point you to a Yahoo Search for:

HDMI DVI switch

You might also try your question on AVS Forum as I am sure that someone there has purchased and tried out one or another of these beasts.

Splitting a change case between information would propose splitting a function between information which isn't available and in simple terms does no longer make any experience. you should use go back truly of spoil even if it has a thoroughly diverse meaning. spoil exits the change case and keeps to with the function, while go back exits the function, returning the fee that you specify to the caller.
