The Z-5500 are best in it's category..it's no question. I've been wanting to get this for a while. I've seen the price go low as 200 so buy at that amount. I've seen the amount go up and down so try to buy it around 200.

There should be a matrix mode....well actually its called pro logic II. You do this on the digital contol pod.I do not own one myself but i own the logtiech g51. What it does is make a 2 channel stereo source and makes it go through all the speakers. Now if you computer settings are set to 5.1 channel audio, then it will act as true surround sound. If you set it to 2.1 stereo source, then you will get the same sound from all the speakers. Try both settings under the pro logic II mode. See which one you like.

The Dolby ProLogic II setting should give you 5.1 surround from a stereo source. Use the ProLogic II music setting for music instead of the pro logic II cinema setting.

You're talking about something like "5 channel stereo" that my Denon receiver has, but that's not an option for you. Dolby PLII should definitely work - it determines what's common between the left and right speakers and sends it to the center channel, then I believe does an out of phase feed to the back speakers and you'd have to turn up the back speakers to get them to the same level as the fronts. It's odd that you're not getting any center channel with PL II.
As far as cables go, yes, you can get Y adapters to split the signals to the discrete inputs on that unit. Just "Y" the left channel once to get two outputs, then "Y" one branch of the original "Y" to create a 3rd branch (if that makes sense). Do the same for the right channel, then "Y" the L/R into the single input for the center channel. Splitting signals is always better than combining them(like you'd be doing for the center channel) but it will work.
Radio shack should have all those Y adapters you need.
