Question:
What's the best way to hide the cables for my surround sound speakers?
2006-08-16 11:50:30 UTC
I've got a simple surround sound setup in my living room with 2 rear speakers. Right now I have 2 lame cables strewn across my carpet in the middle of the room between the tv and the back of my couch. What's the best way to get these things out of the way? Is there a wireless solution? Should I just put the wires up along the corners of the room? Under the carpet? Any other ideas? Thanks!

Personally, I hate the sight of surround sound speakers. While some may like the look of the nice black, shiney cabinets all over the room, I think it adds more to the effect to have the cabinets hidden as well.

What ya do is mount the speakers in the rear of the room where it is difficult to see them. A dropped ceiling works great for this as you can just put them up above the dropped ceiling pointing down, (Lay them on thier face.) If the speaker is too heavy lay it across a junction point in the support rails. If you do this right and conceal the wires in a molding strip you really get the effect of sound "coming from nowhere".

If you don't have a dropped ceiling and must run wires along the baseboards, use flat cables and simply tuck them under the molding. But, camoflage the speakers wherever you put them. One way is to cover them in a piece of black felt. It looks good and even protects the speakers. Then you sit something decorative on top of them and it just looks like a little pedestal.

This may seem like a bit of trouble, but to me it's worth it just to have a surround sound system that is invisible. It really adds to the effect to look in the direction of a creepy sound and not see where it came from!

Well, not sure on the wireless solution, but have the same problem, so know what you mean.

I've opted with under the carpet but this limits speaker locations due to short cables.

Only other solution that I thought of was to run the wires through a cable tidy (basically plastic square tube in white from the back of the TV, and along the ceiling, this solutions only really good if you have white ceiling and walls, or are willing to paint the tubing the color of the wall.

Otherwise it's probably best to use the same idea along the skirting (you'll probably have to send both rear speakers the same way to avoid the door, and you'll most certainly have to purchase further wire, (again not sure if there would be a problem with degradation of sound quality over a great distance, but I'd suspect a further 10 meters of cable shouldn't cause too much problems on a decent system.)

Again the solution above can be done under the carpet, and probably a better choice for (out of sightness), beware though don't pull up all the carpet, only small areas, and use a wire coat hanger to get from hole to hole, otherwise you could have a carpet shrinking issue, or looseness).

Hope that's helpful.

Ther are so many answers I can't read them all, but didn't see this on first two pages:

Buy a RUG. If you are just starting out with surround sound etc., then my guess is that you are still trying out locations for your speakers & probably want to play around. If you put the cables under a rug (remember to keep both L&R the same length) then you can easily play around with your speaker positions without worrying about the cables. It will also make it easier to change the cables later if you decide to upgrade the cable.

I live in a carpeted apartment where drilling is not allowed (walls, floors, etc.) What I do is place an area rug (about 5X8' or larger) in front of the TV. I make optional use of a runner (those rugs that are long and slender which sometimes comes bundled with area rugs) on the side if needed. With those two 'covers' I can hide most of the cables that need to run across the living room to side tables besides the sofa, where I place the rear speakers. Strategically placing additional pieces of furniture (e.g. chairs, ottomans, magazine holders, etc.) or decorations can hide the last segments of cable before they show just a bit prior to making contact with the rear speakers. The front cables I hide mostly behind a suitably sized entertainment center, on top of which the 3 front speakers are placed. The subwoofer goes on the floor in between the entertainment center and a narrow table holding an aquarium on it. The subwoofer cable doesn't show at all and the ones for the front and center speakers mostly hang out of view behind the entertainment center.

Me, I own my own home, so it will be different if you rent ... but this is what I did ...

I went to the radio shack and purchased enough speaker wire so that when I put the main part of the Surround Sound on top of the Entertainment Unit, I strung the wires for the REAR speakers up through the ceiling above, along the attic, and down through the ceiling just above where I was mounting the Rear Speakers -- a VERY NEAT solution that avoids having the wires across the floor and tripping on them and having the speakers being destroyed because they were pulled off their mounts.

PS -- I purchased quality 1st -- when I bought my Surround Sound unit, I bought it with the idea of minimizing the profile of the speakers all around. so my speakers have great sound, but are very small in size. One doesn't need the hulking speakers -- just something that can provide you with enjoyment.

This is the easy route, but run the wires straight across the room. You will most likely put them near the back of the couch. Run the wires under the couch to help hide. Now you still have some wires running across your floor. Simply measure the distance from your entertainment center to the couch (the most important measurement and use it as the width). Go to local thrift stores, rug companies, or home depot and find a throw rug that matches the measurement or is just slightly smaller. The length will normally be bigger then width; so go with what will fit in your living room or will work well visually. Now place rug on floor and cover those unsightly wires (it is alright if there is a couple inches of visible wire; the reason you want to hide them is partially visible and partially safety). Finish off the decor with a coffee table and your done.......Move over Martha Stewart.....

A. Wireless is not a solution its a problem

B. If you can notice the difference in sound between a 25 foot run of wire and a 100 foot run of wire, you must have sonar for ears.

C. The carpet corner trick works well and usually leaves a clean install if you use stands in back.

D. If you use the carpet trick, then take off the moulding below where you want to mount your rear speakers you can drill out a small bit of the bottom plate and small amount of seetrock (where the moulding will cover once its reinstalled) then fish the wire up and out the wall with no patching at all and have the cleanest install of them all!!

I got the perfect solution for you. Hide as many of the ones that you can and then there are these really cool looking wire holders from IKEA for the wires that you can't hide under the carpet. IKEA sells things that allow you to mount the wires on the wall or under a sofa. It's pretty cool. Definetly check it out. Some of these wire holders are like tubes. It's there so that people generally don't see the wires. And...they come in different colors and designs so you can pick out the right look for you- stuff that goes with the room...it looks good.

My parents did this same type of thing years ago, and they have had no problems whatsoever. They went under the carpet by making very small incisions where the wire was to enter and come back out. It's the easiest if you have a wall that you are doing it next to, so the wires don't go in random directions. Use a fish wire (a metal wire used for fishing and pulling wires through pipes etc.) and push it to the side you want the wires to enter in. attach and secure the wire to the fish line and pull all the way through. Really easy to do, and you're never going to need to access the wires unless you are changing out your system. Hope that helps - good luck ;)

I have several solutions to your problem. If your surround receiver is capable of transmitting a wireless rear surround go for it.

I have the same problem as you and what I have done is have the surround speakers sitting in front on my entertainment center when not in use, put them in the rear when playing my movies.

and then putting them back in front when not being used. That way they are out of the way until I need them.

Running the wires along the corners or under the carpet , if it is feasible will work.

Having your wires installed in your walls could be another solution if you are somewhat handy and you own your own home.

I don't know that it's a good idea to run the cables under the sofa. You'd still be stepping on them and would have a tell tale bump in the middle of the carpet. If you want it to look really nice, and if wireless is not an option, I would recommend getting this stuff which is decorative wood chair rail molding that goes around the wall, and you can hide your cables under it. Here's a picture of chair molding if you're not sure what I'm talking about:

http://www.rd.com/images/tfhimport/2002/Nov02_Install_Chair_Rail/20021101_Install_Chair_Rail_page001img001_size2.jpg

. I put it up myself and it was very simple and looks great. Lowes usually has everything you need in stock. Look at this free video to see how to install:

If you have wall-to-wall carpet , and you want your speakers next each wall. Get a slot screwdriver, and inch by inch push the wire between the carpet and the baseboard. If you start this proses at each speaker and work toward your surround sound unit all the extra wire can be coiled and put on the shelf under the unit. If you do not have wall-to-wall carpet try to tape your wires out of traffic areas.Duct tape works very well,a two inch peace every 12 to 14 inches works most of the time.

My step dad is a custom electronics installer. (or something of that nature) I sometimes help him out on some job sites.

I have had the hard job of tearing up the carpet around the edges of the wall. Lift it using a pair of pliers and only tear up a little bit at a time. Then you have to tuck the wires in, preferably behind any border you might have on the wall. Then you have to tuck the carpet back in, hiding the wires. You can get some sort of carpet tucking tool at Canadian Tire or Home Depot Im sure. And that will help with getting the carpet back into place.

Good Luck!

Shortest route is the best for better sound quality. You can go directly under the carpet. Use some stiff wire and nylon rope and thread under the carpet. After the rope comes through, tape the speaker wires to the rope and pull through. You can also go through the ceiling if you have the rear speakers wall mounted. So many options really, just depends on how much time you want to spend. My option was "Flatwire" do a yahoo search for description. Can be painted and comes in various gauges

I'm always cautious about putting wires under carpets just out of fear of some wire shortage causing a house fire, so, I'd go with your first idea about putting the wires up along the corners of the room. When I got my Surround Sound system along with my purchase of this computer, I put the wires along the back and sides of my big 3-sided desk, and had the small 5 speakers placed in various discreet points around my desk and the sub-woofer next to my desk. It made an AWESOME sound and made my wiring easily accessible but not constricted or pinched or smothered where I could worry about wire shortage or fire possibilities. God Bless you.

Depending on how ur room is you could run the wires through the walls, the problem with this is patching the walls and its a huge pain. You could run them along the corner of the ceiling, but when you have guests come over it dosnt look the best, so you could cover it up with something. The way I would run the wires is to run them under the carpet, its tough to do, but when you walk over them usually you cant tell that they are there.

I used a wall block I got from Radio Shack that has connectors for 8 wires or banana plugs. I mounted my speakers near the ceiling near each of the 4 corners of the room. Drilled a 7/8 inch hole in the top plate in the attic above the wall block and dropped the wires down to connect to the backside of the wall block. Then I strung the monster cable through the attic to where I drilled small holes in the ceiling to accommodate the wire. pushed a cut clothes hanger up through the hole from below so I could easily find its location in the attic. Dropped the wire down through this hole, then made a one loop coil and tied the coil off with one of those plastic ties. then hooked up each speaker in sequence. Now all I had to do was run a short wire from my receiver to the front side of the wall block and PRESTO! no mess. This took about 4 hours of my time.

Can you run the wires throw the walls? It all depends on how big your speakers are, if they're small you can hang them from ceiling but if they're the tall kind, yeah you can run the wires under the carpet, I would advise you to go wireless though to avoid a messy situation. Also check into seeing if they have any devices that you can plug your wires into from the back that will allow you to attach another device to your TV making it wireless. Good Luck, know that wires up the wall or across the floor look super tacky!
2006-08-23 10:19:02 UTC
i have wall mounted speakers in the upper corners of my living room. a somewhat complicated but very useful solution would be to drill holes in the ceiling, and wire them through the attic. as long as the holes are roughly the same size as the wires, this should greatly improve the appearance of your sound system and shouldn't generate any problems.

just a heads up: if you consider doing this you will probably need to buy some more speaker cable. you can get it at Best Buy or other electronics stores, and it is fairly inexpensive.
2006-08-28 07:17:18 UTC
Okay... the easy option would be to just run them undeneath your carpet, but you can also try going to an electricity gadget shop and ask for a wire organiser, there are so many of them, but they are all very useful for concealing, and disguising wires...you can get the ones that actually fit along the skirting boards, or the ones that fit vertically, or wall box', you basically just have to look around for the ideal one that suites your need, the instructions are sure to come with the product. Good Luck finding the right covering for your wires.

i had that problem too because i recently bought a sony dream surround sound system and a 42 inch plasma and it looked good except for the cables all up on the wall so what i did was run the cables through my attic and then within the wall where the tv and the surround amp was and bought a speaker wire outlet and that was it its really simple and it only took half an hour it looks really nice its sound...withought cables and a tv on the wall

there are some wireless solutions some work some don't its whatever your willing to pay. Now i got carpet and I've taken spoon and tucked it under the baseboard (between the carpet and the baseboard) all the way from speaker to system when I've come to door there is usually a threshold plate you can loosen and slide the wire neatly under it. Hope this helps

The best solution would be to get wireless speakers or put the wires in the walls or floors. If you can't do that then get long wires and run them along the walls, don't put it under the carpet, depending on how big you wires are it may be all lumpy.
2006-08-23 15:03:54 UTC
If you can't go wireless then I would suggest buying an accent rug. Add a little flare to the room and have something to hide those ugly cables under. I did that in my house and while it serves a purpose it adds loads in enviroment points. Plus no one has ever notices the cables!

I am not too sure but i think the best way is to put the cables etc... under the carpet, or maybe even staple. I hope it works!!! I think there is something like wireless connection so that you dont have to deal with all the cables and the mess!!!

While running them through the walls and house can be a good idea, at times, it could be devastating to your house/apartment if you don't know what you're doing. A useful tool for mounting your wires is the nail-in clip. You can find these at any hardware store. You can press them at the bottom of the floor, against the wall, and use the nail-in clips to secure them, stretch them, and neatly mount them. No more cables across the room, and no big @$$ holes in your walls. If your cables aren't long enough, visit your local electronic store for wire extensions.

Put the wires in the wall. We put ours through the floor and up from the basement using a Fish. It's time consuming, but in the end there is no visible wires at all except for the 2 inches coming out of the wall to the speaker which u probably won't see unless u look for them anyway.
2006-08-16 12:22:08 UTC
Under the carpet along the edge. You have to lift the carpet by pulling up on it with some pliers. Only pull up a little at a time and push it back down when the wire is covered. Go to Home Depot and get yourself a carpet tucking tool (around $!5) to tuck the carpet back. Do not pull up the whole side because it will unstretch itself.
2006-08-16 11:56:01 UTC
My wires are long, so I stapled them to the carpet all the way to the picture. You would have a problem if you had hanging speakers because you can't get them up the wall without being noticed. But yeah I stapled them along the corners of the carpet all the way to the back.

What we did was run it along the baseboards. When we ran it up the wall I framed 3 8 by 10 black and white photos and hung them vertically along the wire that was pulled tight. The speaker sits above the photos and it looks better than just a wire hanging down. A friend of mine covered hers with some funky mirrors hung in the same manner. Good luck.

I had the same problem. I ran them up the back wall of my entertainment center, then up to the ceiling and around the room to a corner in the room, down the corner and behind my couch. I used little nails put the nails in the wall not throught the wires)to keep the wires up. Pull the wires tight so that they don't sag. If the wires don't match the color of your wall or ceiling paint then paint them to match.

Rather than wireless, where you risk losing sound, run your wipes along the edges of the walls and across. This will be much more cost effective. If your walls are wood, get brown cable. If they're white, get white cable, etc. We have our surround sound setup this way, and you can barely notice the cables are there.

Good luck!

Run your wires along the carpet and butt them up to your base boards (trim). Take a ruler and gently push the speaker wires under the base boards. The carpet will hide it and there is enough of a gap under the base boards and carpet so the wires will not be damaged. Worked for me...

There are wireless surround sound speakers available by Logitech. I dont remember the model number, but I suppose you can google, uh, Yahoo! Search it.

Under the carpet is not a bad idea either.

If you have a basement, go down through the basement, and up through the floor at the connection points. If not, under a carpet, or you could put in new molding on the floor, putting the wires behind. Good luck.

remove the baseboard right below the speakers make a notch for the wire and run the rest under your carpet or spend some money get longer cables and run them from your speakers along the baseboards to the TV

ok this is advice from a fourteen year old, but try this. Tape all the wires together using masking tape into one cord. One way to run them is up towards the ceiling and around the wall edges, then back down the wall to the outlet. Another way is to run it around the bottom wall edges all the way to the outlet. Also, a good way to hide the wires is to drill tiny holes in the wall and use appropriate plastic plates to permanently assign the holes, and run them through the walls and out. Good luck!!!

The best way to get these cables out of your way is by constructing an artificial layer of POP (Plaster of Paris) and inserting the wires in them. The other option would be to stuff them beneath the carpet at the sides close to the wall.

under the carpet worked great for me. i dont know how to rip up carpet and put it back seemlessly but someone had already ran a co-ax cable under my carpet so i just used that trail.

also it might be of some help if you paint the wires the same color as the wall.

Most of the times, you can squeeze some thin wires between the edge of your carpet and the wall to hide them.

I also taped mine to the ceiling, but that's ugly.

It's also good to have a lot of length on the wire, so you can stretch it to places that will hide it.

I used a staple gun and stapled them where the carpet met the wall. Hiding them underneath the carpet won't work because the carpet won't lay flat and the outlines of the cables will be clear as day.

If you have the ability to go under the floor (subfloor, basement) this is going to be the best solution. It takes some extra effort but looks nice. You can buy special, configurable recepticles from home depot that you can install in the walls or base boards for a more professional look.

there are many ways one way is to run around the room along the molding .

the more dificult is to run under the carpet to do this take a peice of stiff flat cable and stick it in a hole cut in the carpet with a utility knife shuve the cable towrds the stereo wonce this is through tie the other cable to the flat one and pull it though hope this helps

Install crown molding, and run the wires behind it. Then go into the wall and come down a couple of feet to a hole in the wall and put the speakers there. That's what I did, and it worked great.
2006-08-23 13:03:55 UTC
run them along the walls and tack them down untill you reach a doorway...push them under the carpet ot tape them down and cover with a rug.

at the corners you just tack them into the corner and them buy some wood 45 degree angle molding from a local home supply store (lowes, home depot) run the moulding up the corner and the wires are gone.

If you have drop ceilings, you can run the wires up through the cieling. Radio Shack sells speaker covers - cut round holes in the tiles over your couch, put the speakers in the cieling over the holes, and then cover the holes with the Radio Shack covers.

best option is to pull it uner the carpet. just buy long enough cable to trace it along the wall. its easy to simply lift the carpet along the wall run the cable and tap the carpet back in. watchout for nails.

if there is garage below, drill a hole through the floor into the garage run the cables along the garage ceiling and pull them back up via another hole where you need the speakers.

Go to your local Home-Depot or Lowe's and get a set of "fish-rods" . They should be in the electrical department . Most are green, and come in a 4-5 foot tube . They can link together so you can run them through your walls-attic. Also get a paddle bit for your electric drill to make a passage for your wires . You might want to get a sheet-rock saw for your hole that's going to be behind your TV or receiver . That's the way i did mine, and it really turned out great ... GOOD LUCK !

I have a similar setup. I bought some speaker wire and ran the wire along the wall. They sell plastic tubing at home depot that hides the wires along the wall.

Alternatively, you can purchase flat wire that runs along the wall. It white and you cannot see it against a white wall. it can also be painted

You didn't specify your budget...If you can afford it, then get fiberoptic cables installed in your walls. Then run those flat wires that are made for it over your wall however you like and paint over them...their' invisible! They cost about $400 bucks though...

I would say make it go around the room under the carpet. Then get those things from home depot to make 'em stay. You'll probably need some extentions though!

my dad got a surround sound system and he pulled the wires under the house, but if that doesnt work for you, you could cover the wires with a carpet(make sure it matches your decor). you could also put it through the wall.

There are "flat" speaker cables available that are designed specifically for under carpet installation.

Barring that, run your cables along the baseboard, if possible. They can be painted, prior to installation, so that they blend in better.

Keep your cable runs as short as possible.

best way is to have cables inside the wall with wall plates close to the speakers. It is done by fishing wires in the walls. If your room has room has basement below you would have to feed them from your home teather system in basement than inside the walls with fishing tapes (tools for electricians).you will need drill and bits and fishing tape and electrical tape and some speaker wires.

wireless would be best

if not, just tuck them under the carpet or depending on floor type you could drill a hole and go under the floor and back up on the other side.

We ran my sons wires into a closet and up into the attic across his den and down in each corner.

Just throw your garbage and such on top of them...rotten tomatoes, banana peels, etc. Really, no one will notice and it will beautify the room while hiding your cables. Ha ha!

Actually, you should just duct tape them to the floor in a few spots and throw a rug on top of that if you don't like the idea about the garbage. Good luck!
2006-08-23 10:01:16 UTC
I hung mine along the corner of the ceiling and then painted then the same color as the walls. Thi s was the easier route. You can always fish them through the walls but that is a pain.

yeah i really hate how it looks when there's cables everywhere, what we did was just put it under the carpet, but for some of the places we couldn't really cover it up so we used transparent tape and taped it to the ground

orrr

you can put it on the edge of where the wall meets the flooring and then paint the wires the color of the wall...lol i dunno about that but my friend did it and it looked pretty good. good luck

Lay the speaker wire in the part between the wall and the floor and tuck it in to this area. and if this is permanent cover it with a quarter round this is a type of lumber you can purchase from a lumber yard .

Go to the lighting section at a home builders store, they have a track like plastic u can cut to length and has corners too. U can paint these to match your decor and attach them to walls, along baseboards or even ceilings.

Ideally, you should fish the wires through your wall and run them across your ceiling (if possible). If you have access above your ceiling (either by lifting suspended ceiling tiles or via your attic) the job is a snap and produces a much cleaner, professional looking job.

Perhaps, try burying them under your carpet... or tucking them into to the sides of the wall (where the carpet and wall intersect.

Take Care!

If you don't mind seeing the wires on the wall, I would run it under the carpet.

If you don't want to see the wires, run them through the walls. Either under the floor (easier if you have an unfinished basement) or through the ceiling.

One idea is if you have trim on the top of the ciling you could carefuly remove the trim tuck the wiring underneath and then put the trim back on. If this isnt possiable you could always get creative and run the wiring along the ciling with christmas lights wrapped around them. party on!

I would either say under the carpet, running along the lower edge of your wall, in the wall, or across the ceiling.

Find some tape that's color closey matches your carpet/wall and just tape it. If you have to go up the wall just change the color tape. If you have any shorting or wiring problems later on, you won't have to pull the carpet up etc...

My husband used to hide our cables down the wall behind the shelves [that he built], but it sounds like you would have to run them under the carpet.

I put my wires in the corners and covered them with molding. If you already have molding the push the wires behind it. you may have to pull it out a little and then tap it back in.

If you dont want to spend $ on wireless equipment, try arranging the room around the outlet so they won't be running across it.

We have a basement so we thread them under the floor through the basement. Just drill holes into the corners of the room.

the best solution is to take a rug and out it over them since they sound like they are in the middle of your room. make sure the rug goes with your room so you wont look crazy.

Try to keep them hidden along the crack of the wall and the carpet, you can use staples to keep them down, but it works great.

I bought myself a budget wireless theater system for exactly the same reasons you are mentioning. If you do not want to chase into the floor or walls, do a bit of on line research and buy a new system.

If your basement is below, just drill a hole and run them across to the speaker location and the drill up. If not, then run them along the top of the baseboard.

I normally put them against the wall and try to either get them under the baseboards or use conduit.
