The 170's are supposed to be tailor-made for watching TV and film and offer a surround sound feature to give more of a cinema feel, and with a closed-back design, they should leak less and equally keep external noise out. The 180's however don't offer the surround sound effect, but instead provide a superior level of sound quality and materials for a more comfortable experience, and with an open-back design to give a more spacious feel, but with more external noise let in and out.
My main concern with the 170's is that I have read that the surround sound feature isn't great and that many choose to not use it whilst watching movies. With the 180's, my worry is with the quality of sound for movies, and the fact that there are some occasions where I wish to block out other sounds, but I am unsure how well the 180's will do this.
A problem both of them could suffer from is a delay in transmission, meaning the sound could become out of sync with the on-screen picture, however I would like to think that they wouldn't advertise these as being suitable for TV use if this were an issue.
Any advice on which pair to get would be very welcome. Equally, if you feel there are any other headphones I should be looking at then please let me know. Thanks!
