I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5130 [60w RMS x5] reciever and Cerwin Vega E-712 speakers. I am serverly underpowering these speakers with my current reciever to the point that my reciever cuts out at high volumes. However, any reciever thats available today that gets close to the 300w rating of the speakers costs $1500+. I don't need a 7.1 reciever with 100 different audio pre-set sounds and filters. I just want something in maybe a 4.1 or 5.1 to push these speakers and still sound pretty decent hooked up to my TV. What are some other options for a reciever?

I believe the 300 watt rating on the CV speakers is their peak rating so if you were to push 300W into them they would probably melt. They are a very sensitive speaker (98dB) so it won't take much to drive them. I would expect that your Yammie still gets them fairly loud.

As long as the watts are quality watts you're not under powering. It's when you have a lot of distortion in the amplifier to the point of clipping where damage occurs.

If you are still thinking about upgrading I wouldn't be too concerned about getting a high wattage receiver. Just get a good quality one in your price range that has a low THD at its rated wattage (less than 0.1%).

Bottom Line:

Looking at the Yamaha HTR-5130's specs it should be ok. As long as it sounds ok to you and gets loud enough for you then there is no need to upgrade.
